Types of Dog Breeds

A breed is a group of animals that possesses a set of inherited characteristics that distinguishes it from other animals within the same species.There are over 800 recognised dog breeds throughout the world. Originally there was just a few basic breeds however, thousands of years of breeding by humans means that their are now more different breeds of dog than ever before. In recent years when it has come to breeding dogs, artificial selection has played a big part, meaning more and more dogs are becoming highly specialised.


Mixed dog breeds, or as there sometimes known mongrels or mutts, don't belong to a particular breed. Mixed breed dogs however can still be domesticated or trained as work dogs just as a purebred dogs can. Some dogs breeds are more popular than others, some of the more popular breeds being Labradors, German Shepherds and greyhounds. The most common breed in the UK is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
